You searched the stock. Did you read the filing?

Maybank. Inari. YTL Power. Gamuda. These are the names Malaysians look up most. But a ticker trending is not the same as a business understood. The market has always paid for information that most people never open — and the gap between reading the filing and reading the headline is where that difference lives. We teach the reading, using public numbers you can verify yourself. Application required.

Four numbers Malaysians look up every week — and what each one actually means once you open the filing.

These are teaching cases, not recommendations. Each one uses a real public filing to show how a headline number can mislead if you stop reading at the first line. The people who read past the first line saw a different company than the people who didn't.

MAYBANK · 1155 Banking

Net profit fell 4.2%. Core fund-based income rose 3.2%. Same quarter.

Maybank's 1Q FY26 net profit came in at RM2.48 billion, down 4.2% year-on-year. But in the same filing, net fund-based income rose 3.2% to RM5.11 billion, and net interest margin expanded 10 basis points to 2.14%. The profit decline came from weaker trading and markets-related income, not from the core lending business. Reading one number without the other tells you a story that isn't true — and two readers of the same filing walk away with two different views of the bank.

→ Learning focus: separating core lending income from trading income, and why NIM direction matters more than headline profit.
INARI · 0166 Technology

Core profit fell 26%. The stock is still one of Bursa's most-searched names.

Inari's FY26 core net profit came in at RM187.5 million, down 26% year-on-year. But the same filing shows a RM41.9 million fire-incident provision and a RM1.7 million forex gain — one-off items that distort the headline. Strip them out, and 4QFY26 core profit actually rose 50.6% quarter-on-quarter to RM46.4 million. The question isn't whether profit fell. It's which profit you're reading — and whether the number you quoted in a group chat was the one that reflects the operating business.

→ Learning focus: core profit vs. headline profit; how one-off items change the entire picture.
YTL POWER · 6742 Utilities

298MW is signed. 600MW is planned. 1.2GW is the ambition.

Analysts covering YTL Power's Johor data centre park note that the current target price only accounts for the 298MW already contracted. Capacity is expected to double to 600MW by end-2027. A second expansion phase — roughly another 300MW — could add further value, but it has not yet locked in tenants, which is why the analyst did not adjust the valuation for it. Three numbers. Three completely different levels of certainty. The market prices certainty differently from ambition, and knowing which number you're holding changes how you read everything else.

→ Learning focus: contracted capacity vs. planned capacity vs. ambition; why only one of them belongs in a cash flow forecast.
GAMUDA · 5398 Construction

RM45.5 billion order book. But what percentage is actually signed?

Gamuda's unbilled order book reached RM45.5 billion after a RM1.72 billion hyperscale data centre contract in Port Dickson. Management is guiding toward RM50–55 billion by end-2026, with more data centre contracts still pending award. The total number is impressive. The teaching point is in the breakdown: contracted work, awarded work, and work still in tender are not the same asset — and the difference between them is the difference between a number that pays and a number that just sounds big.

→ Learning focus: reading order book composition, not just the total; distinguishing contracted revenue from pipeline.

After approval, you get six modules, a daily flow note, and a voice channel for questions.

Everything is built on public data. No calls, no wins posted, no numbers you cannot verify yourself.

01

Quarterly report reading, in 5 minutes

A one-page checklist: which three lines to read before the MD&A, and the question to ask when operating cash flow and net profit point in opposite directions. Using Maybank's 1Q FY26 filing as the first worked example.

02

Order book and contract value, broken down

"Order book of RM45.5 billion" and "298MW contracted" are not the same thing. Learn to separate contracted, awarded and pending contract value, and what each implies for revenue visibility.

03

Valuation multiples by industry

Why banks are read on price-to-book, semiconductors on forward PER, and construction on order book coverage. The same multiple answers a different question in each industry.

04

Daily flow note

Where foreign, retail and local institutions net bought or sold, and by how much — one note per day, each figure sourced. You can cross-check every number against Bursa announcements yourself.

05

One question, one voice reply

If a number in a filing doesn't make sense, send it in. You get a short voice explanation back — no link dumps, no copy-paste, no "go look it up yourself."

06

Public data source list

Bursa announcements, broker summaries, flow reports — every source we use is listed. You don't need to trust us; you need to know where to verify.

An independent education provider. Not a broker, not a fund, not a licensed financial adviser.

Bursa Flow independent education team

Bursa Flow is a Malaysia-based independent education provider focused on reading and understanding public stock market information. We are not a broker, not a fund manager. We do not place orders for you, manage your money, or give you buy/sell advice.

We do one thing: we take the filings, order values, flow data and valuation numbers that Bursa Malaysia publishes every day, and turn them into teaching material you can finish in five minutes and verify yourself — delivered inside a chat where you can ask questions at any time.

The course is educational. What you learn is a reading framework. The final decision always stays with you.

  • No investment advice — no buy, sell, or hold recommendations.

  • Public data only — Bursa announcements, broker summaries, financial press. Every figure is independently verifiable.
  • Application required — this is not an open group anyone can drop into.
